Interest Rates

Spring is here—and the time has come to provide an update on the patterns we’ve been watching develop in financial markets related to Interest Rates (10-year Treasury), Stocks, Gold, and Oil.

Since our last update, there have been quite a few exciting developments in markets. Interest rates have moderated, which seems to have allowed markets to relax enough to let some risk assets like large-cap tech Stocks, Gold, Oil, and Bitcoin (to name just a few) run higher in price.

This raises the question: Are we entering a new Bull Market? And are there risks ahead investors should be wary of if Interest Rates stay higher for longer—or if Oil prices get weaponized in an election year?

Before we get into the market updates, we’d like to thank everyone who joined us on our March 13th Zoom Livestream when Justin, Patrick, and I went through the charts and discussed the various developments we’re seeing in markets.

The lively conversation included the topics mentioned above as well as some thoughts on Bitcoin, dividend-paying stocks, why demographics may prevent The Fed from lowering rates too aggressively, and much more.

Interest Rates – Higher For Longer or Lower Later?

We started the March 2024 Market Update Livestream with a discussion on how stock markets have seemingly become obsessed on the thought that The Federal Reserve will be lowering rates by June of 2024. We posed questions about what happens to stock and bond markets if this obsession proves to be wrong. We discussed demographic trends and what happens if Commercial Real Estate crashes. And, of course, we covered the charts and what chart patterns we may be looking for in the future to help us decide how our account allocations may need to be adjusted to optimize these changing tides.

You can watch everything we discussed in this short clip here: Watch / Listen

If you’re concerned about how rising interest rates may affect your portfolio, you’ll want to watch the entire section that discusses Interest Rates and what we’re watching for.   You can view it here: Watch / Listen

We wrapped up the interest rate conversation on a solid question from Justin about the possibility that interest rates may have made a historical shift in 2021 from lower for decades to higher for longer—and what that may mean for markets and potential investment portfolio performance as we move forward the next 3 to 5 years.

If you’re concerned about how difficult it may be to create income without losing principle in a rising interest rate environment, it’s a good watch.  You can view “Why The Fed May Not Be Able To Lower Rates” here:  Watch / Listen

The Stock Markets – New Bull Market or Crash Ahead?

After we literally beat the interest rate conversation into the ground, we moved on to discussing stock markets and two (2) patterns that may be developing in equity markets—one bullish and one bearish.

We shared the chart patterns we’re watching and discussed the adjustments we’ve made to our account allocations in the first part of 2024 to increase our exposure to dividends and yield within our accounts.

We highlighted a few sectors we see as undervalued. We also cautioned against getting too aggressive due to a couple of parts of the market (like High-Yield Bonds and Small-Cap Stocks) that have continued to raise some concern about how strong the legs under the Bull market thesis may be.

If you’re staring at the stock markets, wondering what the heck is going on, it’s a great watch.  You can watch “Stock Markets: New Bull Market or Crash Ahead” here: Watch / Listen

Commodities – Gold and Oil – Is The Trend Your Friend? And, What If….

We finished up the Market Update Livestream with a conversation about the recent breakout higher and all-time high prices in Gold and how this trend may continue to play out in 2024. If you’ve been wondering about Gold and whether it’s worth your attention, you can watch what we’re seeing in Gold markets here: Watch / Listen

Last but not least, we ended on a conversation about Oil prices in 2024. We discussed whether they’ll get weaponized by Saudi, Russia, China, etc., as we head into the election and how this could play into why The Fed may not be able to lower rates later this year. The conversation is a must-see if you’re curious about investment opportunities from rising Oil prices. You can watch the discussion and charts here: Watch / Listen
